They may sound like something out of science fiction, but since 2011 rear inflatable safety belts have been offered in the Ford Explorer. In 2014 Ford will expand this option to include the Fusion. The Fusion will be the first in the midsize class to offer the belts, which are currently offered in the Ford Taurus, Flex, Explorer, and in the Lincoln MKZ and MKT.
Inflatable safety belts contain a tube-shaped air bag created for the outboard rear seats. They function the same as standard belts, even when used with child safety seats, although one must be sure to check their child seat manufacturer’s manual before use. By reducing impact pressure, inflatable belts help to alleviate neck, head, shoulder and chest injuries that can occur in the event of a crash. Srinivasan Sundararajan, Safety Technical Leader of Ford’s research and advanced engineering group, stated, “This is another unique family technology that builds on our safety leadership.” As we know, the back seat is the most optimum place for children and this technology makes their time in the car even more secure.
The Fusion is manufactured in Ford’s Mexico factory in Hermosillo, but will soon add production to the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, MI.
