The teaser photos of the Jaguar C-X17 concept just unveiled in Frankfurt seemed to show a type of vehicle that Jaguar’s not known for, and now that the wraps are off this is most definitely the case. This concept serves as Jaguar’s announcement of its intent to produce a compact crossover sometime in the near future.
The C-X17 is more than just a styling exercise, and that much is evident from the finished, almost production-ready look of the concept. The real story is underneath, because this concept rides on Jaguar’s new modular and scalable aluminum unibody architecture. Jaguar says that the new architecture will be used to produce a new sedan in 2015, and while it had no comments about production plans for the C-X17, the marketing folks are clearly considering it seriously.
The compact crossover concept shares a strong family DNA in its styling, from the big chrome grille to the dynamic curves of the flanks. Jaguar styling hallmarks like the power-bulged hood and twin “heartlines” along the sides are reminiscent of the new F-Type. A panoramic roof and smooth, two-tone interior finish the look. The new aluminum architecture has been designed to carry Jaguar’s supercharged V6 engine, promising entertaining performance. A low center of gravity and lightweight aluminum body keep the handling carlike and entertaining, while Torque Vectoring and Jaguar’s new all-wheel drive system would ensure sure-footed performance in all conditions.
So, will Jaguar pull the trigger and take a step into the compact crossover market? Public reaction to the C-X17 may just be the deciding factor.
