You don’t see much of Mitsubishi’s capable compact SUV lineup most of the time. The brand is aiming to change that up a little bit with a pair of one-off Outlanders built in conjunction with the H360 Group, purveyor of a wide range of lifestyle magazines and websites. The 2013 Outlander Sport Summer Edition and 2014 Outlander Winter Edition are equipped to keep active folks on the move throughout the year.
The compact Outlander Sport Summer Edition is equipped for warm-weather sports, and includes a pair of roof-mounted Trek mountain bikes and cargo space for kettleball workout weights, yoga mats, and tennis gear. A waterproof compartment holds wakeboard vests and gear. On-board, there’s an HD camera with a wi-fi remote, the better to get those YouTube videos up immediately, and an iPad Mini mounted in the headliner. The burnt-orange Outlander Sport features twenty-inch wheels and color-matched stitching on the black leather upholstery. Jay Cardiello, strength and conditioning specialist and Fitness Editor-at-Large for Shape magazine, was consulted in the build.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is the larger, seven-passenger Outlander Winter Edition. Heated seats, winter floor mats and all-wheel drive are included, of course. On the roof are a pair of snowboards, and matching hats, goggles, jackets and snow pants are contained in a trunk-mounted shelf. There’s also a mini coffee maker in the back. The “pictures or it didn’t happen” mindset is still in effect with an iPhone 5 camera lens in the armrest and an HD camera in the dash. A Recaro child seat is also in the back. As a final touch, the shift knob has been replaced by a ski pole grip.
The Summer and Winter Outlanders are just toys, of course, and Mitsubishi says there are no plans to produce either of them. Too bad!
