After an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Hyundai announced a voluntary recall of 27,500 Genesis vehicles built between April, 2008 and March 16, 2012. The recall is to address complaints of problems with the brakes that have resulted in one crash and about two dozen complaints.
The recall addresses an issue with the hydraulic electric control unit in the braking system. More than 40,000 cars were initially affected. According to the Detroit News, Hyundai issued a service bulletin in March to replace the brake fluid in affected vehicles, and about sixty percent of the cars have been repaired, resulting in the reduced number covered by the recall. The repair consists of a brake system inspection and replacing the brake fluid with fluid containing an anti-corrosive additive. The repairs will be completed at no cost to owners.
NHTSA reports complaints of increased brake pedal travel and reduced brake effectiveness in affected cars, and one crash has been reported. The problem has been diagnosed as a faulty ABS module.
Owners of cars affected by the recall can contact Hyundai dealers to see about repairs whether a recall letter has been received or not.
