Subaru’s first hybrid arrives this winter as an early 2014 model, and the company has announced an affordable base price of $25,995. The XV Crosstrek Hybrid is based on Subaru’s popular compact crossover, and provides improved fuel economy without sacrificing all-terrain capability.
Subaru’s 2.0 liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder provides power. An electric drive motor producing 13.4 horsepower and 48 pound-feet of torque is integrated into the XV Crosstrek Hybrid’s continuously variable transmission and boosts the power going to all four wheels. Functionally, the hybrid version is just like the conventional model, with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The chassis has been tweaked slightly to account for the XV Crosstrek Hybrid’s additional weight. The battery pack is mounted low and contributes to the car’s already low center of gravity.
As the top model in the XV Crosstrek range, the hybrid features a long list of amenities, including a navigation system, LED taillights and a backup camera. A removable cargo cover and cargo tray are standard, and dealer-installed accessories fit all models including the hybrid.
EPA fuel economy ratings have not yet been released.
