Supporting both the arts and its home town, the GM Foundation has given the Detroit Symphony Orchestra a $400,000 grant, providing funds for a winter tour in Florida. The orchestra will perform from February 25 to March 4, 2014.
Touring with the Orchestra will be Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medalist Olga Kern, Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn and will be led by Music Director Leonard Slatkin.
“Touring, domestic or otherwise, is an imperative part of sharing this orchestra’s art with a broad and diverse audience. Thanks to the generosity of the GM Foundation, the DSO will be on the road for the third time in a year,” Slatkin stated. “We’re really looking forward to seeing our friends in Florida again.”
GM Foundation has given nearly $2 million in grants to help the DSO in the past decade which have helped it perform in Detroit and elsewhere, such as Carnegie Hall in New York in May 2013. In total, more than $84 million has been given to cultural institutions and nonprofit organizations in Detroit by the GM Foundation.
GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard said, “The DSO is one of the city’s finest jewels and this tour will build upon Detroit’s national reputation of having the finest musicians and live entertainment.”
Featured pieces will include Bolero, Mother Goose Suite, and Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel, Piano Concerto No. 1 by Prokofiev (featuring Olga Kern), Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff (featuring Olga Kern), a celebration of the Morton Gould’s 100th birthday by playing his Spirituals for Orchestra, Tchaikovsky’s No. 5, and Brahms’ Violin Concerto (featuring Hilary Hahn).
