Next week at Art Basel in Miami Beach, BMW’s seventeenth Art Car will make its North American debut. Created by American artist Jeff Koons in 2010, this BMW M3 GT2 has been turned into a one-of-a-kind work of art. The number “79” is featured on the car, a tribute to the BMW M1 painted by Andy Warhol that raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. Warhol’s M1 will also be on display at Art Basel, along with the new BMW i8 high-performance plug-in hybrid and i3 urban electric car.
Art Basel runs from December 5 to 8 in Miami Beach and involves over 250 art galleries from around the world. BMW is a long-time partner of the show, which features works from over 2000 artists. BMW’s art car tradition dates back 40 years, and the marque has had cars painted by Warhol, Roy Liechtenstein and other renowned American artists.
“It is with great pride we bring the Jeff Koons Art Car to the US and present it for the first time publically in North America,” said Ludwig Willisch, BMW of North America’s president and CEO. “Koons wanted to design a BMW Art Car because of the tradition set forth by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and other great American artists, that is why we are very proud to display both the Koons and the Warhol car at the same event.”
