When the re-thought Lincoln MKZ hit the streets earlier this year, we thought that it was a good start for re-branding Lincoln with a more distinct identity, and waited for the follow-up. Now we’ve got it, in the form of the MKC crossover, and things are continuing to look up for the beleaguered luxury brand.
The MKC was shown as a lightly-disguised concept at the North American International Auto Show in January, and the production version doesn’t deviate much from what was shown then. Aimed at the premium-compact utility market, the MKC shares the MKZ’s elegant split-grille styling and fine-line detailing. An available panoramic glass roof lets the light in, and soft exterior lighting should help it to stand out among the blazing LED running lights of the competition. Inside, the MKC offers French-stitched leather seats, real wood and an available upgrade to Bridge of Weir leather. The push-button shifter from the MKZ makes an appearance, and the center console has a unique shelf-like form. Lincoln’s THX II audio system and SYNC with MyLincoln Touch are also available.
The MKC offers built-in smartphone connectivity that’s always on, so the MyLincoln Mobile app is always available to lock, start and locate the vehicle via smartphone. The MKC also has an approach-detection system that shines “welcome mats” on the ground by the front doors and switches on the exterior lights when it senses the owner (or whoever has the key) is approaching.
The base engine is a 2.0 liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder producing 240 horsepower. MKC buyers can also upgrade to the 275-horsepower 2.3 liter EcoBoost. A choice of front- or all-wheel drive is available, and all-wheel drive MKCs also feature Continuously Controlled Damping, an active suspension with three modes tailored to individual preferences.
Active driver aids are available, including a collision warning system, lane keep assist and an active parking assist that guides the driver into and out of tight spots.
The MKC goes into production during the second quarter of 2014, with sales beginning in the summer.
