Subaru previewed the styling of the next-generation Legacy in Los Angeles, and with the oddly-named Levorg in Tokyo. The Levorg is a production-ready station wagon, while the Legacy Concept displayed a more futuristic look, but both cars are clearly related under the skin and provide a very good look at what to expect from the next Legacy, due in 2015.
Celebrating the twenty-fifth year of the Legacy model, Subaru admits the Legacy Concept provides a hint of the styling direction for future models. The more modern styling includes a new hexagonal family grille and redesigned headlamps. Twenty-one inch wheels and a short trunklid give the car a sporty look, and the taillight design echoes the front end. C-shaped LED running lights are also prominent. The design is muscular and simple, with a dramatic coupe-like silhouette.
Across the Pacific, the Levorg looks more production-ready (mostly by virtue of having door handles) but the headlight shape and slick greenhouse are very similar to that of the Legacy Concept. The grille and front fascia are more conventional, showing an evolutionary change to the current Legacy, and Subaru’s trademark hood scoop rides proudly on the hood. Subaru says the production version of the Levorg goes on sale in January.
Currently in its fifth generation, the Legacy was last redesigned in 2009, so a revamp is due in the next few years. With the show-car trimmings stripped away, it’s a good bet that the Legacy Concept represents the next-generation car.
