Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher was injured in a skiing accident in France this weekend, according to CNN. Schumacher, 44, was skiing at a resort in Meribel and fell, striking his head on a rock. Though he was wearing a helmet and conscious after the impact, he had slipped into a coma by the time he arrived at the University Hospital Center in Grenoble and has undergone brain surgery.
Details of the accident, which according to the resort director happened on an unmarked slope, are awaiting a full police report. Schumacher’s agent reported that he had undergone surgery in a press conference on Sunday according to Reuters, and more information is expected later today.
Schumacher retired from Formula One in 2012, after winning seven World Championships and 91 races, making him the most successful driver in the sport’s history. During his career, he drove for Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes.
