Dodge’s Blacktop sport appearance package isn’t just for the big boys any more. For 2014, it’s extending the popular option to the subcompact Dart. Following Dodge’s successful tactic of adding aggressive looks and popular options in a low-priced package, the Dart Blacktop joins similar packages available for the Avenger, Charger, Challenger, Journey and Grand Caravan. Dodge plans to pull the wraps off of the new styling kit in Detroit next week.
The formula is pretty simple. Based on the SXT model, the Blacktop gets unique gloss black wheels with a matching grille, smoked headlamp bezels and a unique limited color palette set the Dart Blacktop apart from its fellows. Muscle-car colors like Redline Red, Header Orange and Blue Streak should ensure visibility. It’s got a slightly sinister look that’s uniquely Dodge with a touch of custom-car flair.
On the inside, the Dart Blacktop features a choice of two premium cloth colors and upscale accent stitching. Available options from the Dart catalog include a nine-speaker Alpine sound system, an 8.4-inch touchscreen radio, backup camera, heated seats and a navigation system, all of which serve to make the Dart Blacktop a very fine subcompact indeed.
The 184-horsepower 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine and suspension are unchanged. The Blacktop appearance package for the Dart adds just $295 to the bottom line, however, so we expect to see quite a few of them once the cars start shipping to dealers during the first quarter of this year.
