As infotainment functions become more widespread, the question of how to keep the numerous features from distracting the driver becomes more pressing. Garmin arrived at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and showed off an interactive head-up display (HUD) designed to help keep the driver’s eyes on the road.
The conceptual HUD system has passive and interactive modes. In the passive mode, audio, navigation and communication info can be customized in a simple interface that’s just below the driver’s line of sight. Map and audio info can be displayed in a non-intrusive, multi-colored projection.
In the interactive mode, a proximity sensor on the wheel allows the driver to page through multiple menu options using steering wheel buttons. This puts visual cues for route programming, radio station selection or phone calls directly in front of the driver, rather than in the center stack. Expect Garmin to work with automotive OEMs to get this system on the road in the near future.
An updated version of Garmin’s K2 infotainment system was also shown in Las Vegas. The intuitive user interface turns the car’s dashboard into a “digital cockpit” while providing hands-free smartphone access.
Matt Munn, Garmin’s managing director, said, “Garmin’s K2 infotainment platform and interactive HUD interface have been developed utilizing an in-house driving simulator that uses cameras to track the driver’s eye movements. The interface design is based on the time and cognitive load required to perform a task with the goal of minimizing driver distraction.”
