The premium-compact market is growing rapidly past the hatchback models that spawned it. Joining the growing crowd of small trunk-backed luxury cars is a four-door version of the Audi A3, due to hit the streets next year as a 2015 model. Audi also plans to expand the A3 lineup, which until now has only offered a five-door in the U.S., with a cabriolet, TDI diesel model, and an S3 performance sedan variant. A hybrid version is also due in 2015.
Pricing for the new A3 sedan starts at $29,900, and the bottom line is enhanced with features like a standard panoramic sunroof, leather interior and bi-xenon headlamps. Audi’s MMI infotainment system is also available. Other options borrowed from the A3’s big brothers include a Bang & Olufsen audio system and 4G LTE connectivity.
Stylistically, the A3 has been updates so that it now looks nearly identical to the A4, apart from being smaller. Audi’s trademark single-frame grille and LED light accents leave no doubt as to this car’s parentage, and a strong character crease down the side provides a sporty visual cue.
Four engine choices will be offered at launch, including Audi’s 1.8 liter and 2.0 liter direct-injection turbocharged fours, the 2.0 liter clean diesel, and a high-output 2.0 liter turbo exclusive to the S3. If you have to ask about the availability of Audi’s signature quattro all-wheel drive system, the answer is a resounding “of course.” Six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions are standard across the board.
Will a small Audi sedan be well-received, or will it be too similar to the Volkswagen Jetta? Driving Fans can’t imagine that there will be too much difference between the two, apart from styling and the availability of all-wheel drive. How much is the Audi badge worth?
