BMW brought the convertible version of the new 4 Series Coupe to the Los Angeles Auto Show for its first North American public outing. The new, longer and wider 4 Series replaced the 3 Series Coupe this year, and the convertible version fills out the lineup.
The 428i and 435i are hardtop convertibles, with a three-piece retractable hardtop that provides superior weather protection compared to a traditional soft top and turns the 4 Series convertible into a true dual-purpose vehicle. The longer wheelbase means there’s more rear-seat legroom. The styling is familiar, with BMW’s four-headlamp face and twin-kidney grille influenced by the sleek 6 Series. Top-down the interior and exterior blend together, tapering toward the rear for an effect similar to that of a boat’s deck. As with the coupe, Sport and Luxury lines are offered, each providing unique interior environments.
The 428i is powered by a 2.0 liter twin-turbo four cylinder, while the 435i gets a 3.0 liter twin-turbo straight six. Eight speed automatic transmissions are standard for both models, and all-wheel drive is available in the 428i.
BMW’s new droptop goes on sale this spring with an MSRP of $49,675 for the 428i and $55,825 for the 435i.
