Chevrolet presented a pair of additions to its subcompact Sonic lineup at the Los Angeles Auto Show, offering more choices in style and performance to entry-level buyers. The Sonic Dusk is the production version of a custom car shown at SEMA in 2011, while the new Sonic RS adds performance and a more aggressive look.
The Sonic Dusk goes for a more sophisticated look, with unique Ashen Grey Metallic paint and a matte-finish grille. Stainless steel is used on the lower window moldings, and the black leather interior features sueded accents and tan seat inserts. The Sonic Dusk is downright elegant for such a small car.
Both the Sonic Dusk and the Sonic RS are powered by Chevrolet’s 1.4 liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Total output is 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual transmission has been re-geared in the Sonic RS for additional acceleration as well, without affecting the 27/34 fuel economy.
In keeping with its sporty nature, the Sonic RS also features a lowered suspension as part of the package. Chevrolet has given the Sonic RS a new front fascia with a deeper air dam and vertical air intakes at the sides. Black, silver and white are the only colors offered. On the interior, jet black leather upholstery, a three-spoke racing steering wheel and red “RS” accents are indicators that this Sonic is something special.
Chevrolet’s Performance Parts division also has new components for the Sonic, should buyers want to build an even faster Sonic RS. Available dealer-installed accessories include an upgraded turbo kit with a high-flow exhaust that can add up to 10 horsepower, a suspension with even more drop, a brake package that includes Wilwood calipers and eighteen-inch wheels.
