The Michigan Chapter of March of Dimes, together with UAW-GM Center for Human Resources, held a raffle to help moms and babies. The winning ticket was pulled on November 19, 2013 and the winner received a new 2014 Buick LaCrosse donated by UAW-GM. This year’s raffle makes UAW-GM’s contribution raised $1.3 million since 2006.
The raffle was done all over America, with General Motors facilities represented by the UAW selling tickets and fundraising to the public and amongst its own employees, giving all of the proceeds to March of Dimes.
UAW Vice President Joe Ashton, who directs the union’s GM Department stated: “UAW-GM people are incredibly generous and have taken on this cause to support health for moms and babies. By partnering with the March of Dimes, UAW-GM strengthens families, uplifts our communities and supports our customers nationwide.”
The March of Dimes is a voluntary organization who works diligently to help prevent premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.
GM North America Labor Relations Vice President, Jim Glynn, said, “GM is proud to join our UAW partners to support the great cause of the March of Dimes. Working together, we will help fund ongoing medical research on premature births and find solutions to this condition that impacts one in nine babies in the U.S.”
Dr. Sonia Hassan is the associate dean of Maternal, Perinatal and Child Health at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and Michigan Prematurity Awareness Chairperson. She’s representing March of Dimes in this event. Most recently she’s been credited as instrumental in the ongoing fight to prevent premature birth.
Zariah Bradford, a now thriving 11 year old girl who was born prematurely, drew the winning ticket for the raffle. Arrangements are being made coordinate the delivery of the winner’s new LaCrosse by way of the Buick dealer network.
