Volkswagen’s Golf hit the Frankfurt Auto Show from all segments, with the unveilings of the high-performance Golf R, the e-Golf electric, and the unusual, larger Golf Sportsvan concept, which expands the Golf’s capability–literally.
This isn’t the first time Volkswagen has applied the multi-purpose vehicle template to the Golf platform. The Sportsvan concept is taller and more spacious than the Golf, and appears to be bound for European production. Engines and suspension are shared with the current Golf, and it features a number of upscale options including a blind spot monitor, adaptive cruise control and City Emergency Braking. The suspension’s tuned to provide the sporty and confident handling that Volkswagen is known for.
Volkswagen says the Sportsvan will hit Europe as a mini-minivan some time in the next year or so. No plans for U.S. sales were announced, but with the growing popularity of cars like the Ford Focus C-MAX on this side of the Atlantic, there’s a chance we could see an interesting expansion to the Golf range in the future.
