Chevrolet’s done a good job keeping its drivers connected, thanks to the MyLink infotainment system that debuted last year. In 2014, the link between driver and car gets even closer with the introduction of Siri Eyes Free Integration on several models.
By connecting the Chevrolet MyLink system with Apple’s intelligent assistant Siri, Chevrolet enables drivers to keep their eyes on the road while handling important business. Compatible iPhones with iOS 6 or iOS 7 can be connected to the MyLink system via Bluetooth, enabling the driver to give Siri voice commands for a variety of tasks, including voice-activated, hands-free phone calls, playing songs via iTunes, dictating voice messages and accessing calendar appointments. The Siri Eyes Free application is currently offered on the Chevy Sonic and Spark, and will be spread to the 2014 Camaro, Cruze, Equinox, Malibu, SS and Volt.
“The response to Siri Eyes Free integration in Chevy Sonic and Spark from our customers has been remarkable,” said Chris Perry, Chevrolet’s VP of U.S. Marketing. “Easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink’s existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience, so we’re excited to expand this to even more customers.”
Six months of OnStar’s premium Directions and Connections service is also included with the application, providing OnStar’s automatic crash response, stolen vehicle tracking and roadside assistance. OnStar’s RemoteLink app works in conjunction with MyLink, offering locking and unlocking, remote start (on vehicles so equipped) and other functions via smartphone.
Apple iPhone users who enjoy the easy interface with Siri will no doubt appreciate being able to have the electronic personal assistant along for the ride in the car as well, and Driving Fans is in favor of any technology designed to reduce driver distraction. Whether talking to Siri is just as distracting as talking on the phone to friends remains to be seen.
