As a reminder that the compact crossover GLA-Class is on the way, Mercedes presented a conceptual high-performance version at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Though it’s a “concept,” it’s hard to imagine that Mercedes will resist the urge to build the GLA45 AMG.
The GLA-Class will slide into the lineup below the GLK-Class, offering a smaller crossover to Mercedes customers. It’s expected to land some time in 2015. The Concept GLA45 AMG adds the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine from the CLA45 AMG, boosting output to 355 horsepower while still keeping fuel consumption somewhat reasonable. AMG’s Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive is also included. AMG claims a sub-five-second 0-60 run thanks to the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission.
The GLA45 AMG is modified in typical AMG fashion as well, with forged twenty-one inch wheels designed to show off the red brake calipers and a redesigned front spoiler. Air deflectors and oversized air intakes dominate the front design, and the concept even features a racing number, stripes and an AMG windshield sash so it looks track-ready. At the rear, a lower diffuser insert and AMG rear spoiler complete the race-ready look.
There are no official plans for production, but Driving Fans predicts that we’ll see an AMG version of the GLA-Class within a year of its introduction.
