The next generation of Hyundai’s large, rear-drive premium sedan is due for a complete redesign, and the Korean manufacturer is letting a few details about the redesign slip. The new car is expected to be strongly influenced by the HCD-14 concept shown last year, and features a new, more distinctive design as well as new luxury features. The Genesis was the start of a new path for Hyundai, as it helped to do away with the cheap-car stigma that the brand had been saddled with since coming to the U.S. The new Genesis should further reinforce Hyundai’s image as a full-line manufacturer.
The new Genesis has more upright styling that should help it stand out from the crowd better, and Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” design language has evolved to form a bold face with a vertical grille and smooth lines. Inside, Hyundai promises premium materials and a high-tech “human machine interface.” The next Genesis will most likely adopt a host of new connectivity and infotainment features.
No powertrain details have been released, but Hyundai says that it will make an all-wheel drive Genesis available for the first time, using its HTRAC electronically controlled all-wheel drive. Improved suspension dynamics and a new electronic power steering system are also on the menu for the new Genesis.
Moon Sik Kwon, head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Center, said, “The evolved all-new Genesis is the product of Hyundai’s best resources and capabilities and we strongly believe it will be a game-changer in the market.”
Driving Fans observes that both Hyundai and Kia have done well in recent years bringing concept cars to life on the street. If the new Genesis retains enough of the unique aspects predicted by the HCD-14, it could be a hit.
