With the modern automotive landscape as broad and diverse as it is these days, it’s hard to
imagine a need going unfulfilled. And yet, there are still niches. You say that what you
really want is a compact BMW with four doors and a hatchback? Good news! The BMW 4 Series
Gran Coupe is at your command.
The latest addition to the 4 Series lineup arrives in the spring, and features all of the
good stuff from the 4 Series coupe, including the excellent 2.0 liter four-cylinder and 3.0
liter six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engines. The 428i Gran Coupe gets the 240-horsepower
four, while the 435i Gran Coupe is powered by the 300-horse six that’s a mainstay of the 3
and 4 series lineups. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and a 428i xDrive
Gran Coupe will also be offered with all-wheel drive. Performance neatly matches that of
the 4 Series. Suspension settings have also been recalibrated to match the slightly heavier
Gran Coupe. Handling can be sharpened with an available M Sport suspension upgrade as well.
This four-door coupe is distinct from the 3 Series sedans in that it’s the same length,
width and wheelbase of the 4 Series coupe, and shares the coupe’s more emotional styling.
The roof has been stretched about four and a half inches backward and given a more gentle
slope, increasing rear seat headroom. This also increases trunk space to 17 cubic feet.
The coupelike silhouette neatly hides a large tailgate, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s rear
seats can be folded, opening up a 45.9 cubic foot cargo area that’s neatly trimmed with
stainless steel. At a glance, this car’s cargo carrying capabilities are cleverly masked.
Interior styling is also shared with the 4 Series coupe, with the addition of unique colors.
BMW’s Sport and Luxury trim lines are available, as is an M Sport package for the interior
and exterior.
4 Series Gran Coupe prices start at $41,225 for the 428i Gran Coupe and $46,725 for the 435i
Gran Coupe. The all-wheel drive 428i xDrive Gran Coupe stickers for $43,225.
